A well-known general counsel of Del Mar College in Corpus Christi and an accomplished LCU senior will both speak at LCU’s spring 2016 undergraduate commencement ceremony, when a total of 202 undergraduate students will graduate.
The undergraduate ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 7 at 10 a.m. in the Rip Griffin Center (26th & Chicago).
The headline speaker for undergraduate commencement, Augustin “Augie” Rivera, Jr., is the general counsel for the Del Mar Community College District, where he serves as a member of the President’s Executive Team. A native of Driscoll, Texas, Mr. Rivera is a graduate of Yale University and Stanford Law School and was admitted to the Texas Bar in 1988.
This year’s student speaker, history major Samantha Torrez, was a member of the first LCU student development board. The student development board allows student’s the opportunity to create a proposal of a project on campus that they are passionate about, and then present those to selected local businesses with the purpose of raising funds for that project.
Through the development board and with her faculty mentor, Torrez was able to complete her project of creating a $10,000 endowed scholarship in the name of Ruth Ross, her grandmother who passed away her freshmen year of high school.
“I was very excited when I found out I had reached my goal. I know that this will help other students entering into the humanities department receive a great education at LCU,” said Torrez.
