On Jan. 21, during halftime of the men’s basketball game, Malori Maddox and her family were presented with a check for $8,909.08 from the LCU Athletics Family.
Malori received a standing ovation when she and her family walked onto the court. After two months in Dallas, Texas for surgeries, rehab, and recovery, Malori returned home on Jan. 10. During her absence, students rallied in support of their peer through prayer and fundraising.
The check was presented by Becca Walters, Associate Athletics Director, and Ashton Bell, President of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). After the presentation, Malori’s volleyball team members came and joined them on the court for hugs and pictures.
“While Malori was in Dallas throughout the previous months in recovery, the LCU athletic family held fundraisers and raised over $8,900 to help cover medical expenses,” said Walters in her recap of the basketball game. “At midcourt, the Maddox family was presented with the money collected by Malori's fellow student athletes.”
The money raised by LCU Athletics, primarily through t-shirt sales, will help the Maddox family cover the cost of Malori’s hospital bills. A video of Malori’s return to the Rip Griffin and the check presentation can be found through KCBD.
