The Nina Variations

Scenes from The Nina Variations by Steven Dietz; directed by senior theatre education major, Kathryn Shipman

In this funny, fierce and heartbreaking homage to The Seagull, Steven Dietz puts Chekhov’s star-crossed lovers in a room and doesn’t let them out. In forty-three variations on their famous final scene, Nina (a young actress) and Treplev (a young writer), pit their vibrant wit and soaring passions against one another in a fast-paced tour de force of romantic entanglement.

The Insanity of Mary Girard

Scenes from The Insanity of Mary Girard by Lanie Robertson; directed by senior theatre education major, Emily Hooper

The Insanity of Mary Girard is the real-life story of a Philadelphia woman who spent the last 25 years of her life in a mental institution. In 1790, Mary Girard is committed to an asylum. After she became pregnant by another man, her husband had her declared legally insane. Now, she sits in a chair as the "furies" dance around and impersonate people from her past. By the end of this haunting and highly theatrical piece, Mary has grown rather convincingly into her diagnosis.

These plays will be LCU’s entry in the 2023 Christian University Theatre Festival to be held in Brownwood, TX at Howard Payne University.
