Grounds Supervisor

Functional Title: Grounds Supervisor
Classification: Non-Exempt - Hourly
Division: Facilities
Department: Maintenance
Reports To: Director of Facilities

Primary Function: Coordinates and directs grounds maintenance and gardening activities involved in the maintenance of grounds and landscaped areas; schedules, repairs, and maintains irrigation; plans, develops and implements landscaping and gardening projects; trains and evaluates the performance of assigned personnel.

Major Duties:

  • Perform landscape maintenance and supervisory duties including, but not limited to, mowing, watering, weeding, irrigating, planting, pruning, raking, and fertilizing.
  • Supervises the maintenance and operation of power-driven lawn equipment.
  • Pick up and transport refuse, brush, and other unwanted material.
  • Clean parking lots including filling potholes and levelling of sidewalks/walkways.
  • Performs minor cleaning and repair of groundskeeping equipment.
  • Operates various equipment such as mower, tractor, string trimmer, edger, blower, chain saw, hacksaw, pole saw, skid steer, backhoe, ditcher, etc.
  • Responds to emergencies during evening, nighttime, and weekend hours.
  • Any other duties as assigned by Facilities Director

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to help students, faculty, and staff in a professional manner.
  • Strong ability to multitask and problem solve.
  • Ability to adapt to changes in the work environment.
  • Ability to work outside in all weather conditions.
  • The ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality is essential.
  • Strong knowledge of planting and care of trees, shrubbery, and grass
  • Strong ability to operate hand tools and equipment such as lawn mower, string trimmer, edger, shovel, etc.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Must have a current and valid Texas Driver’s License and have the ability to drive.

Education and Experience:

Graduation from high school or equivalent. At least five (5) years’ experience in commercial or higher education grounds maintenance preferred. Previous experience or license to repair and install underground irrigation preferred.

Physical Requirements: 

While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee will be required to do the following:

  • Be ambulatory around campus and in buildings.
  • Required to regularly sit and stand.
  • Frequently use wrist, hands, and/or fingers to make small repetitive movements such as typing, distributing mail, and picking up small objects.
  • Ability to talk frequently to convey detailed and/or important instructions or ideas accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Be able to hear average or normal conversations and receive verbal information.
  • Required to lift packages and/or move heavy objects, 50+lbs.
