Habilitation Aide Job Description
Habilitation Aide defined for the purposes of this job posting:
An employee who partners with a person with special needs, helping him or her maximize their daily living skills, coaching him or her toward agreed upon goals and serving as a mentor through the occasional social situation.
The position involves working with our daughter as a habilitation aide before and after her PreVocational Program Monday through Thursday and various hours Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Great position that works around university class schedules.
Natalie is a very social, high functioning young woman with Down syndrome. Natalie’s primary challenge is her low speech intelligibility. She has an enormous vocabulary and is understandable once the listener becomes accustomed to the sound replacements she uses.
The position would be a great fit for anyone with an interest in working with a young adult with special needs.
Starting pay is $10 per hour and is a payroll position with all applicable taxes withheld and a W-2 generated each January.
Employment is funded by the CLASS* program. Payroll checks are paid every two weeks from the CLASS program administrator that I use.
I serve as the employer.
Employee must have reliable transportation and a clean driving record. Position includes mileage reimbursement when using personal vehicle to transport Natalie.
CPR certification is required. Before COVID-19 a live CPR instructional class was required, may be an online class now. As the employer, I can pay for the CPR certification class for the employee if necessary.
Meals are included when in our home or dining out with Natalie and/or our entire family. Ample refrigerator space is available if employee prefers to bring their own food.
I work from home and am here most of the work hours but not all. My husband and I socialize and travel some so there are evening/overnight hours available based on the employee’s desire to pick up more hours.
Scheduled hours are very flexible. Position would start out at 10 – 15 hours per week with more hours available as other staff members need hours off for travel or local events.
Thanks for your interest in this position!
*CLASS stands for Community Living Assistance and Support Services. CLASS provides home- and community-based services to people with related conditions as a cost-effective alternative to placement in an intermediate care facility for individuals with an intellectual disability.
Job Requirements: Must be able to pass a criminal background check and have a clean driving record and a reliable vehicle. Must have a heart and desire to work with our 26 year old daughter who has Down syndrome.
