Office of Health Professions

Overview

As part of the Lubbock Christian University College of Professional Studies, the Office of Health Professions (OHP) streamlines access to opportunities, services, and resources for students aspiring to enter various health professions. Through OHP pre-health students will be connected to faculty mentorship, academic advising, access to campus resources, exposure to health profession internship and shadowing opportunities, information about high impact growth opportunities (e.g., undergraduate research, medical missions, service learning, etc.), and have access to a host of other strategic opportunities to bolster their application and acceptance to professional programs.

Objectives

In alignment with the Lubbock Christian University Mission, "to be a Christ-centered, academic community of learners, [preparing pre-health profession students] for lives of purpose and service,” the objectives of OHP are to:

  • Partner with pre-health profession students in defining their vision and purpose, and creating career pathways;
  • Provide information and mentoring to pre-health profession students about various health-related fields to ensure that students are suitably matched;
  • Connect pre-health profession students with volunteer, shadowing, and internship opportunities that expose students to the hands-on, daily realities of various health professions;
  • Build a sense of community among pre-health profession students to enrich their student experience via shared passions and interests;
  • Support pre-health profession students in each facet of the application process to health professional schools;
  • Foster leadership growth through undergraduate research, medical missions, community service opportunities, and the pre-health professions student organization; and
  • Track and connect with Alumni providing opportunities for Alumni Health Professionals to serve and support the OHP and its students.

The Gary and Pat Step Institute for the Health Professions

The Gary and Pat Estep Institute for Health Professions supports current students who plan to further their education in the health professions after graduating from LCU. The institute provides scholarships for current and incoming students, funds research fellowship opportunities, contributes to travel for students visiting and engaging with professional programs across Texas, and enhances healthcare shadowing and mentoring programs, among other strategic initiatives of the Office of Health Professions.

The institute also provides more opportunities for faculty to create experiential learning opportunities for students so that they are even better prepared for the challenges of dynamic and ever-changing technological advancements in all areas of health care. The institute assists faculty in helping students to understand that learning is a lifestyle that goes beyond graduation and into a lifetime of purpose and service.
