Pre-Optometry

Pre-Optometry

Students preparing for a career in Optometry are considered to be on a Pre-Optometry path. In order to qualify for Optometry School, students must take necessary prerequisites for each school.

In order to practice in this field, individuals must obtain a Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) degree. This may require additional education and clinical experience, for more information contact HealthProfessions@LCU.edu.

What do Optometrists do?

Optometrists examine the eyes and other parts of the visual system. They also diagnose and treat visual problems and manage diseases, injuries, and other disorders of the eyes. They prescribe eyeglasses or contact lenses as needed. Click here for a full description of what Optometrists do.

What is the job outlook?

Employment growth for optometrists is projected at 24 percent from 2016 to 2026, which is much faster than the average for all occupations. Vision problems occur more frequently later in life.  Aging populations will likely increase demand for optometrists.
