Nature of Social Work

Social work is a profession of licensed individuals with a strong desire to help improve people's lives. Social workers are trained to help people cope with daily challenges in their relationships, families, and the community at-large. A social work degree will prepare you to advocate for better services, social policy and engage in community development as well as research of social issues.

Social workers value services to others, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity and competence (NASW, 2021).

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports:

  • Over 708,000 social workers were employed in the United States in 2021.
  • The need for social workers is expected to increase by 9% by 2031. This increase is faster than the average for all other occupations.
  • Child, family and school social work job opportunities are expected to increase by 8% by 2031.
  • Healthcare social work job opportunities are expected to increase by 11% by 2031.
  • Mental health and substance abuse social work job opportunities are expected to increase by 11% by 2031.
