2015-2016

Ashley Albrecht and Jase Hill:

Over a period of 36 months, Escherichia coli bacteria were isolated from urban playa lake water and the feces of migratory Canada geese and domestic waterfowl. A total of 540 isolates were tested for resistance to 8 antibiotics as well as hemolytic capability, an indicator of potential pathogenicity. Combinations of overall antibiotic resistance were found in 18% of the isolates ranging from 61 resistant to at least 1 antibiotic up to 2 resistant to 5 antibiotics. The highest resistance was to streptomycin, tetracycline and ampicillin. Of the 540 isolates, 5% were hemolytic. The urban playa lakes in Lubbock are used for recreational purposes, and these data suggest a potential exposure to pathogenic bacteria by direct water contact.

Clayton Brackeen:

“In adults with rosacea, how does treatment with conjunctive bacteriophage therapy compare to treatment with traditional pharmacologic interventions alone in the efficacy of treating rosacea as evidenced by decreased redness (erythema), bumps (papules) and pimples (pustules), or visible blood vessels (telangiectasia) over a 6 month period?"

"Samples isolated from Canada Geese feces and resident waterfowl were isolated and the antibiotic resistance capability of each sample identified. The most common patterns of antibiotic resistance included those resistant to tetracycline, streptomycin and ampicillin. The plasmid DNA was extracted from each sample and amplified using primers for each of the three antibiotic resistance conferring genes. Plasmid DNA is a vehicle for the transmission of antibiotic resistance."

Faculty Mentors: Julie Marshall, Lucy Porter

Allison Pyle:
