We are sad to announce that Impact has been indefinitely cancelled. The following is a letter from Impact Director, Kim Wheeler, explaining not only the impact that this camp has had on both the University and its participants, but also the reasons that it is not continuing.
On July 20, 1986, 150+ participants gathered on the campus of Lubbock Christian College for a newly established program for ages 55 and above entitled Impact. And what an impact it had. For 31 years, friends from throughout the country have come together for a week of fun, fellowship, and spiritual growth. Each year, Impact brought together some of the finest speakers and teachers from all over the nation. Speakers such as Dr. Norval Young, Dr. Gary Evans, Wyatt Sawyer, Mack Lyon, Truitt Adair and countless others that challenged us to reach into the depths of scripture as we studied God’s word.
Participants have climbed mountains, (Give Me This Mountain 1986), became Purer in Heart (1993), found Victory in Jesus (1998), were given Blessed Assurance (2010), and last year (2016) experienced the Aroma of Christ. Impact would not have been possible without the leadership of Ray Pectol, Billie (Pectol) Shuttlesworth, John King, Dr. Jerry Perrin, Ray and Carolyn Sturdivant, Calvin and Dot Reat, Warren McNeill, Jess Peterson, June Bills and countless other volunteers. A heartfelt thank you for the years of service and love they poured into Impact.
Over the past several years, attendance at Impact has steadily declined. Through much prayer and conversations, the decision has been made to discontinue Impact. We are grateful to God for the lifelong friends who were established personally and with LCU through this program. Each one of you have placed a mark on our university that will live for generations to come.
We encourage you to continue to be involved with LCU through prayer for our students, faculty and staff as well as through events on campus such as the Moser Ministry Conference in October, Lanier Lecture Series in November, Homecoming in February and Healthy Families Conference in March. We also invite you to become a member of our President’s Circle in which you will receive quarterly updates about the status of the university from President Tim Perrin, and numerous benefits reserved only for President’s Circle members.
Above all, we pray – “May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had, so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.” – Romans 15:5-6
