Functional Title: Public Safety Officer
Classification: Full-Time Hourly – Non-exempt

Department: Student Life – The mission of Student Life is to provide services and intentional learning opportunities that foster community through personal spiritual growth.

Primary Function: Provide security for individuals, campus buildings and/or property within the university campus by enforcing and/or reporting violations of university policies or guidelines and reporting violations of law to local authorities per Public Safety Policies & Procedures. Works under minimal supervision with reasonable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Major Duties: The Public Safety Officer will:

  • Provide security services to the university campus by patrolling, locking, and unlocking buildings, enforcing and/or reporting violations of law, university policy or guidelines per policy & procedures.
  • Respond to emergencies by assessing the situation and employing tact, diplomacy, and individual judgment to remedy and/or maintain control of the situation, contacting appropriate local law enforcement or emergency authorities as needed.  Some cases may require guidance from the Director of Public Safety/Chief of Police.
  • Investigate complaints, suspicious activity, and accidents.  Prepares detailed written offense/incident reports.
  • Deter individuals attempting to commit criminal acts.
  • Raise and lower flags in front of the Administration Building. 
  • Maintain regular communication with supervisor and other campus officials as required.
  • If necessary, appear in court regarding incidents that occur on university property
  • Provide crowd and/or traffic control during scheduled activities and/or emergency situations.
  • Admit authorized personnel, with appropriate identification, to locked buildings.
  • Observe and report faulty and/or unsafe utility equipment, including the report of fire and other safety precautions when necessary.
  • Maintain and improve job skills and knowledge by attending training courses, classes and/or seminars.
  • Provide basic information and directions to university personnel, students, and the general public.
  • Perform other work-related duties as requested.

Qualifications: Requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or ability to perform this job.

  • Because of LCU’s affiliation with the churches of Christ, this employee must be a professing Christian willing to support the Christian mission and purpose of the university while employed by LCU.
  • Must not be on court ordered community supervision or probation for any criminal offense above the grade of Class C Misdemeanor, must not have been convicted of a misdemeanor offense above the grade of Class C within the last five years.
  • Must never have been convicted at any time of a felony offense.
  • Must not have used illegal drugs in the last five years.
  • Must have a good driving record, with no more than three moving violations in the last three years.
  • Must never have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence as defined by the Federal Gun Control Act.
  • Must have never been convicted for a DUI/DWI.
  • Must have the ability to work well without direct supervision.
  • Must have the ability to interact well with all students, faculty, staff, and visitors of LCU, maintaining a positive, service-oriented attitude in all types of circumstances and contacts.  
  • Must have a high level of personal integrity and confidentiality due to working with and access to sensitive information pertaining to criminal and university investigations.
  • Must have adaptability and resourcefulness in handling unanticipated scheduling changes and other unusual circumstances typical of law enforcement duties

Skills Required: The Public Safety Officer must:

  • Possess a high level of interpersonal skills necessary to provide courteous and professional assistance and demonstrate a positive customer service attitude toward students, faculty, staff, and visitors. 
  • Basic computer knowledge and ability to communicate through email.
  • Possess and demonstrate the ability to think clearly and make prudent, reasonable decisions under calm or stressful conditions.  
  • Possess and demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrate good personal and work ethic.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and privacy concerning knowledge of student issues.
  • Be on time and willing to work the assigned schedule, which may require nights, evenings, weekends and/or holidays
  • Not discuss information about university plans or goals unless authorized by the Director of Public Safety/Chief of Police.
  • Complete training as deemed necessary by the Director of Public Safety/Chief of Police.

Dress Code: The Public Safety Officer will:

  • Work requires a high standard of personal appearance and grooming which conveys a professional image.
  • Wear the prescribed uniform and duty equipment of the department as standard dress. Uniform items will be provided by the university
  • Wear black shoes. Shoes will be supplied by the employee.
  • Have jackets and hats for winter use provided by the university. All hats NOT provided by the university must be approved by the Director of Public Safety/Chief of Police.
  • Males must keep hair trimmed and neatly groomed, not to exceed collar length. Beard and/or mustache must be neatly trimmed at all times. A female’s hair must be kept up in a plain, neat manner, and not restrained by excessive ornaments, headbands, or scarves.
  • Wear acceptable jewelry which may include ring, watch, neck chain, bracelet or any item used for purposes of medical identification. Earrings are NOT acceptable.

Physical Requirements: 

Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will wear a duty belt with approximately 7 pounds of equipment, regularly walk and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to drive, stand, walk and stoop, and occasionally required to climb, balance, kneel, crouch or crawl. During emergencies the physical demand may increase greatly.

Accountability: The Public Safety Officer is directly supervised by the Director of Public Safety/Chief of Police.

NOTE: All LCU employees are required to complete Title IX & Information Security (FERPA) training and Data Security Training at the time of new hire and on an annual basis thereafter. Some positions/departments may require additional training for security or data needs.
