Every summer, members of the Lubbock community come together at LCU to form the cast of a musical. This weekend, the summer performance of “Classic Broadway, A Revue of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Most Enduring Musicals” will hit the stage, and <link events tickets>tickets are still on sale.
Presented by LCU Theatre, Broadway Church of Christ, and Monterey Church of Christ ,“Classic Broadway” will feature songs from five iconic Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals: “Carousel,” “South Pacific,” “The Sound of Music,” “The King and I,” and “Oklahoma!”

The revue is directed by Dr. Laurie Doyle and Allison Smith. The cast includes many LCU alumni and students, but also features performers from other churches in the Lubbock area, and the cast is excited to bring these musicals to the stage.
“The fine arts – music, in particular – have been my passion since I was a girl. Music and song have gotten me through a lot of tough times. Music is such a gift from God. I know I have been ministered to by it and I feel blessed to minister and use my talents to bless others,” said April Tryon (’02), who plays Nellie Forbush from “South Pacific.”
The tradition of a summer musical performance at LCU began with “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” in 2012. It was succeeded by “Children of Eden” in 2013, “It’s a Wonderful Life” in 2014, and “Cotton Patch Gospel” in 2015.

Karen Greer has been a part of the summer musical for all five years – and so has her family.
“Watching my sons and daughters develop mentors and role models who care about their growth as people, as artists, and as Christians is one of those unexpected blessings that has become more dear to me each year,” Greer said.
This year, Karen also helped manage rehearsals and publicity for the show. Her husband, LCU business professor Gregg Greer, and four of their five children are also members of the cast.
Greer added, “Rejoining our musical family each May and welcoming new members into it is one of the highlights of my year.”
Performances of “Classic Broadway” will be Aug. 5-7 at 7:30 p.m. each night. Tickets are available for sale <link events tickets>here at $15 for adults/$10 for seniors, students, and children.
