A group of students and staff from Lubbock Christian University visited the South Plains Food Bank (SPFB) for a luncheon, tour, and volunteer opportunity on Apr. 3.
The informative tour included the Kids Cafe kitchen, which aims to supply food to food insecure children in the South Plains area; the food distribution warehouse, where food is packed into “food boxes” to be distributed to families in need; the storage areas, including the cooler and freezer; the orchard, and the offices.
The SPFB offers the free Behind the Scenes Mission Luncheon and Tour program twice monthly: every first Tuesday and every third Thursday. They welcome anyone to join them to learn more about the Food Bank and the services and programs they provide for the South Plains region.
“People need to know about the Food Bank because there’s a need in Lubbock for people that are hungry,” said Donna Chandler, a long-time volunteer for the SPFB. “There are also people who have gifts to share that are looking for a place to give their time and support. The Food Bank is a great place to them to dedicate that time and support.”
After the tour, the LCU group divided into two smaller groups to volunteer. One group packaged bags of bread, the other packed dry and canned food into food boxes for distribution.
“There are a lot of services the food bank offers around Lubbock with which they could use help from more staff and volunteers,” said Brielle Feauto, a junior early childhood education major who attended the behind-the-scenes tour. “For me, I can share information about the Food Bank with people who need it, so sharing this experience with my friends was impactful for me.”
LCU will be hosting Strike Out Hunger April 14 to raise cans to donate to SPFB. The event will be family-oriented and will include a Chap baseball game, food provided by Aramark, and various activities. Attendees are asked to donate five cans per person or 10 cans per family for admission.
