Lubbock Christian University officially announced the naming of the Phil and Jean Wynn College of Education during a special reception held July 10 in Coahoma, Texas, surprising longtime educator and LCU benefactor Loma Jean Wynn with the honor in her hometown. 

The naming recognizes the lifelong commitment of Phil and Jean Wynn and their family to education. More than 40 members of the Wynn family have served as teachers, coaches, counselors, principals, and educational leaders, reflecting a legacy that has influenced generations of students across Texas and beyond. 

The Wynn family's support of LCU has been longstanding. In 2024, they established the Best-Buchanan-Wynn Endowed Chair of Education, awarded to Dr. Sam Ayers, further strengthening the university's commitment to preparing future educators. 

"What better way to honor a family whose lives have been devoted to education than by placing their name on a college dedicated to preparing the next generation of teachers and educational leaders," said LCU President Scott McDowell. "The Wynn family's generosity will have a lasting impact on students, schools, and communities for generations to come." 

Originally established as a single academic department in the early 1960s, the College of Education has grown into one of LCU's premier academic colleges, preparing thousands of teachers and educational leaders. Today, 100 percent of its graduates secure employment in education, and one-third of the school administrators in Texas Education Region 17 hold an LCU degree.
