Due to the unprecedented situation surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, Lubbock Christian University has set August 22, 2020 as the new date for both their undergraduate and graduate commencement ceremonies.
According to the announcement, Spring commencement exercises for both undergraduate and graduate students have been set to begin at 10:00 AM in the Rip Griffin Center and have been combined into one ceremony. All students who would have walked at either of the commencement ceremonies in May are invited to participate, and those completing their work at the end of the summer will be allowed to choose to walk either on August 22, or in December.
Originally scheduled to occur on May 8 and 9, 2020, the events were cancelled in light of federal and local guidelines for social distancing to help thwart the spread of COVID-19. Rather than simply cancelling commencement exercises altogether or offering an online ceremony, university leadership decided that the best way to honor the commitment and achievements of the graduates was to hold a ceremony later in the year, when their family and friends would be able to celebrate with them in person.
“There is something very symbolic of a graduate being handed their diploma, walking across the stage, and moving the tassel on their mortar board,” said Warren McNeill, Vice President of Marketing and Public Relations. “The culmination of all their hard work is worthy of celebration, and we want to celebrate with these students whom we’ve walked beside these last few years.”
