Lubbock Christian University (LCU) recently hosted the 14th Annual Lanier Theological Library Lecture on the LCU campus. The featured guest lecturer was Dr. John Walton, who provided an insightful presentation on Genesis One in the Context of the Ancient Near East.

The evening began at a dinner with a smaller audience that included a Q & A session with Dr. Walton led by Dr. Mark Sneed, LCU Professor of Bible. Following the dinner the event moved to the W.R. Collier Auditorium in the Margaret Talkington Center for Nursing Education where there was a capacity crowd to hear Dr. Walton present on the cultural context of the world as it was when Genesis was written.

Dr. Jeff Cary, LCU Dean of the Alfred and Patricia Smith College of Biblical Studies, shared, “We are deeply grateful to host scholars of Dr. Walton’s caliber on our campus. His teaching on Genesis both challenges and enriches our understanding of Scripture, and events like this invite our students and community to engage in thoughtful, faith-filled dialogue.”

Dr. John H. Walton is Professor of Old Testament Emeritus at Wheaton College and Graduate School where he taught for twenty-two years. Dr. Walton has authored or edited over 50 books, among them commentaries, reference works, textbooks, scholarly monographs, and popular academic works. He was the Old Testament general editor for the Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible (NIV, NKJV, NRSV) and is perhaps most widely known for the “Lost World” books (including The Lost World of Genesis One, The Lost World of Adam and Eve, and his most recent New Explorations in the Lost World of Genesis).

Walton’s areas of expertise include the importance of the ancient Near East for interpreting the Old Testament as well as the dialogue between science and faith. He is currently publishing a two-volume commentary on the biblical book of Daniel.

Thanks to the continuing generosity of Mark and Becky Lanier and the Lanier Theological Library, LCU has hosted the lectures for the last 14 years, providing engaging scholarly and informative presentations to the Lubbock community. In addition to hosting the Dead Seas Scrolls exhibit on campus as part of one lecture series, a variety of thought-provoking topics have been covered over the years.
