Lubbock Christian University has been selected as the Private University of the Year for The Washington Center. TWC places some 1500-2000 students in internships each year, coming from over 450 colleges and universities, including public institutions, as well as private institutions. Each year TWC executives and staff select one public and one private school to honor as “the best.” LCU was their 2013 choice for the private institution category. The award will be given at a luncheon for TWC Academic Awards on Monday, October 7th, at the National Press Club in Washington D.C., and it will be featured in the program and announced at the annual gala that evening at the National Building Museum.
LCU Washington allows students to complete semester internships while staying on schedule for graduation. Through a unique combination of guided study, internship reporting, and seminars, students receive 12-15 hours of credit in the semester program, and 6-9 credit hours in the summer program.
LCU placed its first student in Washington D.C. for an internship through TWC in 2005, but due to TWC fees many students were unable to afford the opportunity. In 2008, the university secured funding for a five-year, fifteen-student per year placement, providing the placed students with $10,000 scholarships each toward the TWC fees. Since 2008, LCU has placed over 20 students in internships at Washington D.C.
“For LCU, the program and award brings us more national attention and places us alongside some of the largest public and private universities in the country,” says Dr. Patty, Director of LCU Washington. “We are blessed with some wonderful donors. And we have a strong faculty who support this work and encourage students to participate."
