Dr. Blassingame Scholarship

“English Professor,” “Department Chair,” “Dean” — these titles identify Dr. Susan Blassingame at points in her LCU tenure, but “Visionary Leader,” “Amazing Teacher,” and “Devoted Friend” are the titles that best describe her. A staunch advocate for the liberal arts, Dr. B, as she was known by students and peers, had sweeping goals for the university and “her people” in the college she served. She envisioned and launched the yearly Critical Thinking Initiatives and 24-hour Reading events; she rigorously promoted and supported the Christian Scholars conference and the LCU Scholars Colloquium; she championed undergraduate research and the Washington internship program. She lovingly mentored hundreds of students, as well as several colleagues. Dr. B’s advice was often challenging, but always inspiring and encouraging, intended to galvanize others to push themselves and do more, to make a difference in the world. Frequently seen “getting in her steps” as she walked around campus, Susan Blassingame made her presence known. And she made a difference.
