Resident Director — Katie Rogers Hall/Courtyards

Position Title: Residence Director – Katie Rogers Hall / The Courtyard
Classification: Salary nonexempt position
Department: Student Life – The Division of Student Life exists to deepen the sense of community, inspire Christ-like development, and foster student growth with high quality services and programs throughout the student experience.
Reports To: Director of Residential Life
Primary Function: Responsibility for supervision of and service to students within a large residence hall, for the administration of staff and facilities management, and the establishment and maintenance of a residential environment which promotes students’ academic, psychosocial, and spiritual development.

Major Duties:

  • Cultivate a Residence Hall environment that fosters community through caring relationships, service to others as well as mutual encouragement and accountability.
  • Assist the Director of Residential Life in establishing, communicating, and enforcing consistently and equitably University and Residence Life guidelines and policies.
  • Hire, train, supervise, and when necessary, terminate, one Community Advisor (CA) and undergraduate Resident Assistants (RAs) in coordination with the Director of Residential Life.
  • Facilitate bi-weekly residence hall staff meetings (consisting of all RA’s and the CA), weekly senior staff meetings with the CA, and conduct monthly staff development/training.
  • Attend regularly scheduled meetings with Director of Residential Life.
  • In a professional manner, provide structure, guidance, and encouragement for staff and residents focused on empowering resident assistants as Christian mentors and residents in their character development (including hall programming, community development, guest speakers, ministers, etc.).
  • Serve as Residential Hall retention officer. Receive student information from faculty and staff and conduct one-on-one personal assessments with students in crisis or academic distress; develop and implement a plan of action for student success, making referrals to other campus resources as appropriate.
  • Report appropriate 12th day residential hall numbers to Director of Residential Life each week starting a month before the first day of school.
  • Supervise one campus beautification service project and one off-campus service project involving the residential community per academic year.
  • Manage respective facilities. Receive all student maintenance and technology requests and report all requests to the appropriate campus resources.
  • Function as chief administrator of hall safety. Includes fire drills, hall safety training, monitoring and awareness of severe weather, and health/emergency response.
  • On a timeline determined by the Director of Residential Life, plan, implement, and be accountable for personal and professional goals as defined by employee and the Director of Residential Life.
  • Conduct goal assessments as part of the Residential Life Strategic Plan in coordination with the Director or Residential Life
  • Develop and maintain a detailed deferred maintenance plan of respective facilities.  On February 1, send a report to the Director of Residential Life as to proposed summer remodel, maintenance, and facility improvement plans.   
  • Be a part of continual professional development, each semester. This can include academic class work, continued education, conference attendance, etc.  
  • Keep daily office hours from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00p.m. (these hours may vary Tuesday through Friday. Be available for on call responsibilities to be shared with the CA and other campus Resident Directors.
  • Always carry a cell phone to ensure quick access in times of emergency.
  • Provide transportation to students in need of non-emergency medical attention.
  • Hiring and supervision of desk sitter staff.
  • Monthly safety checks (doors, alarms, etc.), documented and reported to Director of Residential Life. 
  • Learn and utilize needed programs including Anthology, Salto, Pharos/Stride, and other university systems.
  • Control access to the resident hall by monitoring key distribution. 
  • Complete and submit incident reports to the Director of Residential Life in a timely manner.
  • Assess rooms for damage and report appropriate fines to the Director of Residential Life.
  • Be knowledgeable of laws related to student privacy.

Duties: Summer 

  • Provide accurate, daily housing updates to the Director of Residential Life.
  • Have a firm returning and confirmed new student count by June 1st, with revisions done on a weekly basis until move-in.
  • Have room assignments completed by the second week of July
  • Work with the Director of Residential Life on RA training, yearly training, and hall programming.   
  • Work with other Residence Director(s) to do one “project” in each hall each summer. This can include painting of offices, minor remodeling, kitchen updates, room redesign, etc.
  • Beginning July 1st, hold standard office hours during the hours of 9:00 a.m.- 3:30 p.m. (Monday – Thursday) and 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. (Friday) to be available to perform professional duties and answer questions, attend meetings, communicate to future students and parents, communicate to present students. Office hours may be accounted for in other parts of the residence hall (i.e. completing projects).
  • Accommodate camps, serve on campus committees and planning, be available for admissions tours during pre-registration as needed, etc.
  • Maintain accurate inventory of hall furniture and supplies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Residential Life.

  • Have the ability and desire to recall names and faces and be involved in a mentoring role in the lives of college students.
  • Protect confidentiality, discussing student information only with the Director of Residential Life or appropriate members of administration and faculty members.

  • Serve as a mentor to students who are in a critical juncture of their lives.
  • Be self-motivated.
  • Possess critical thinking skills.
  • Not divulge or discuss information about possible university plans or goals unless authorized by your supervisor.
  • Possess a willingness to work and/or assume on-call status some nights and weekends.

Education and Experience:

  • Preference may be given to applicants who are members of the Church of Christ.
  • Because of the responsibilities and nature of the position in a female residence hall, preference will be given to female applicants.
  • Bachelor’s degree with relevant experience working with students or in areas related to student development. Experience in residential life and a master’s degree preferred. Non-degreed applicants must be current undergraduate students or willing to enroll to earn a degree. Experience and education may be substituted for one another.
  • In the event that the Residence Director has a family, please note that children of the opposite sex, over the age of 12 (13+), may not live in the residence halls   

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear; frequently required to stand, walk, sit, and occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, taste and smell.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
