Functional Title: Staff Health Nurse
Classification: Full Time: non-exempt, 11-month position (subject to discussion) with benefits
Reports To: Dean of Students and Vice President of Student Life, in collaboration with the designated Nurse Practitioner (NP).
Department: Student Affairs – The mission of Student Affairs is to provide services and intentional learning opportunities which foster community through personal and spiritual growth.
Primary Function: Provide professional nursing care in the Student Health Office to students and employees and to campers during summer camps.
Major Duties:
- Maintain student health & immunization records on the Medicat EHR.
- Proficiently triage, assess patients including point of care testing if indicated, patient education, and distribution of over-the-counter medications.
- Administer medications and/or immunizations to patients via ingestion, inhalation, or injection, as directed by the FNP, and properly document this in the patient's EHR; administer and monitor IV hydration therapy, when ordered by the FNP.
- Instruct patients regarding treatment to be continued at home.
- Provide referrals to external medical providers/facilities, when necessary.
- Gather test results & correspondence from other medical providers for FNP review.
- Call or fax medication refill authorizations, as directed by FNP.
- Maintain updated knowledge of medications, procedures, and skills within professional guidelines.
- Keep updated on the status of any known emergency room visits or hospital stays of established patients of the SHO; document such occurrences in patient’s EHR if indicated.
- Assist with reporting any known reportable communicable disease on campus to the City of Lubbock Health Department.
- Maintain inventory of medial supplies and equipment, and reorder/restock supplies as needed.
- Coordinate the scheduling of two blood drives each semester.
- Organize a Health Fair once a year to promote health awareness & education for the campus community.
- Direct and serve as one of the summer camp nurses in June during Encounter and Camp Champion.
- Explore collaborative efforts with other campus and community entities on various health related initiatives.
- Assist with developing brochures, website information, etc.
- Assist with the Student Health Office budget, as needed.
- Assist with developing annual strategic plan; implement strategies as required for successful completion of plan.
- Perform other duties as assigned by Dean of Students or VP of Student Life.
Job Requirements:
- Possess the ability to interact & communicate effectively with patients, medical staff, and other university personnel.
- Possess the ability to perform typical nursing skills (e.g. injections, starting IV access, blood glucose testing, basic first aid skills, etc.)
- Possess knowledge of and ability to perform CPR (BLS).
- Possess ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals and medical/legal documents.
- Posses the ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from patients, regulations agencies, or members of the business community.
- Maintain confidentiality of student health records, patient records, and any interaction with all clients.
- Demonstrate good work ethic.
- Be willing to work hours beyond standard workday in crisis or emergency situations.
- Be able to understand and work within approved budget.
- Be a team player, proactively looking for ways to continuously improve the services offered by the Student Health Office.
Education and Experience:
Minimum Requirements: Licensed Vocational Nurse. Registered Nurse from an accredited school of nursing preferred. Preference will be given to members of the Church of Christ.
Physical Requirements:
While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and stand sporadically, frequently use wrists, hands and/or fingers to make small repetitive movements, ability to talk frequently to convey detailed or important instructions or ideas accurately or quickly, and must be able to hear average or normal conversations and receive verbal information, and occasionally required to lift supplies and/or move objects up to 30 pounds. Visual abilities are required by this job to prepare or proof medical reports or operate basic medical clinic equipment.
NOTE: All LCU employees are required to complete Title IX & Information Security (FERPA) training and Data Security Training at the time of new hire and on an annual basis thereafter. Some positions/departments may require additional training for security or data needs.
