Speaker: Steve McCleery
After receiving an honorable discharge from the US Army Reserves in 1978, Dr. Steve McCleery graduated with his BA in Education from Lubbock Christian University, his Master of Science in Physical Education from Texas Tech University, and Doctorate in Educational Administration and Supervision from the University of New Mexico.
He began his career in higher education at LCU in 1972, serving as an Assistant Professor, Director of Intramurals, and assisting as a Track Coach and Assistant Football Coach. He then became a Professor and Supervisor of the Physical Education Programs at University of the Southwest from 1980-1984, during which he was noted for distinguished service.
In 1994, he began working for New Mexico Junior College, where he served as the Director of Athletics until 1991. He then transitioned to the Dean of Arts and Sciences until 1998, when he began his tenure as President of the New Mexico Junior College until his retirement on August 1, 2016. During his 18 years as the 50-year-old college’s 5th President, NMJC flourished under his care, expanding and growing exponentially to meet the needs of Southeastern New Mexico.
Dr. McCleery has been married for 46 years to Linda Thornton McCleery, and they have three daughters and five grandchildren.
