Lubbock Christian University (LCU) hosted its annual LCU for LBK Day of Service, bringing together students, faculty, and staff for a campus-wide effort to serve the Lubbock community.

LCU for LBK is an annual spring semester initiative centered on the university’s mission of “transforming the hearts, minds, and hands of students for lives of purpose and service.” While numerous individuals and smaller campus groups provide service to community organizations throughout the year, this event provides an intentional opportunity for the LCU campus community to step away from daily routines and focus collectively on meeting needs across the city.

The day began at 11 a.m. with a kickoff during the university’s daily chapel gathering on the steps of the McDonald Moody Auditorium in the campus mall area. Dr. Scott McDowell, President of LCU, provided an inspiring charge to the volunteers and close the gathering with a prayer over those serving and those being served. Participants then gathered for lunch in the Rhodes Perrin Recreation Center before dispersing to service sites for the afternoon.

Volunteer teams served at numerous organizations across Lubbock coordinated through the Volunteer Center of Lubbock, including the South Plains Food Bank, Children’s Home of Lubbock, High Point Village, Catholic Family Services, and Meals on Wheels, to name a few.

The event was coordinated by LCU Resident Director Kaili Hutchinson and a cross-campus committee representing student life, academic leadership, faculty, and university administration. The group also includes the committee’s three student representatives—Student Government Association President Matthew Duvall, Student-Athlete Advisory Committee President Madyson Eberly, and student representative Doak Sexton—reflecting LCU’s commitment to student involvement and shared leadership in service initiatives.

“Serving others is central to who we are at Lubbock Christian University,” Hutchinson shared. “This afternoon of service is a meaningful opportunity for our students, faculty, and staff to step beyond campus and show our gratitude to the Lubbock community that supports us every day. We’re proud to come together and make a tangible difference in the place we call home.”

Eberly added, “LCU for LBK is a great opportunity for our student-athletes and the entire campus community to come together and make a real impact. It allows us to step beyond our teams and connect with others while giving back to something bigger than ourselves. Events like this not only benefit the Lubbock community but also strengthen the relationships and sense of unity across LCU.”

After serving all over Lubbock for the afternoon, participants then returned to campus later in the afternoon for refreshments and fellowship, including lawn games and drinks provided by The Soda Shack.

Now in its sixth year, LCU for LBK has become a meaningful and lasting tradition for the university, highlighting its ongoing commitment to service and community engagement.

“LCU for LBK is not only a fun way to spend time with friends and professors alike, but also an important time to take our middle name seriously by setting an example of service within the greater Lubbock community,” said Duvall.

“LCU for LBK is a day when we intentionally demonstrate that Lubbock Christian University is for the place we call home, our Lubbock community,” said President McDowell. “We purposely set aside this day to remind our students, faculty, and staff that we are all about living lives of service. The old expression, ‘actions speak louder than words,’ sums up the spirit of the day. What we know from experience is that, for many of our students, the events of this single day will spark action that lasts a lifetime.”

Sponsors for this year’s event include New York Life, Sherri Dement with WestMark Realtors, and United Supermarkets, in addition to support from the Volunteer Center of Lubbock.
