As LCU welcomes another record freshmen class to campus, the university kicked off the 2026-2027 academic year with its 70th Opening Chapel in the McDonald Moody Auditorium.

Since 1957, chapel has served as a meaningful staple of the LCU experience. Four days a week, chapel offers students, faculty, and staff a chance to pause, worship, and reflect on faith together before continuing with the day.

“LCU’s very first chapel service was held 70 years ago on the first day of classes for the brand-new college, September 24, 1957,” shared Warren McNeill, Vice President of University Relations. “It brought together everyone on the campus—all the students, faculty, staff, and administrators for a time to recognize the importance of our middle name—Christian—and to daily enjoy fellowship and community.”

The ceremony included a processional of flags from the various countries and states from which the year’s student body hails, and deans of each of the university's colleges introduced new faculty members to the student body. LCU’s seventh president, Dr. Scott McDowell, implored the audience to remember that no one is in the race alone—that the phrase, “We Walk With You” is more than just a slogan—it’s LCU’s promise to its students. 

The chapel service concluded with LCU Provost and Chief Academic Officer Dr. Kent Gallaher officially opening LCU’s 70th academic year, and Dr. Philip Camp closed the event with the singing of the Alma Mater.

“The tradition of gathering as a campus community to worship and enjoy fellowship with one another continues today,” McNeill continued. “It was a wonderful celebration, with a completely packed auditorium, and a great way to kick off our 70th year.”
