If you answered yes, then the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) is the degree plan for you. Social workers truly touch lives, empower people and strive to help individuals, families and communities overcome their challenges.

Nature of Social Work

Social work is a profession of licensed individuals with a strong desire to help improve people's lives. Social workers are trained to help people cope with daily challenges in their relationships, families, and the community at-large. A social work degree will prepare you to advocate for better services, social policy and engage in community development as well as research of social issues.

Social workers value services to others, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity and competence (NASW, 2006).

A Social Work Degree Emphasizes:

U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics reports:

  • Over 607,300 social workers were employed in 2012. The need for social workers is expected to increase by 19% between now and 2022. This increase is faster than the average for all other occupations.
  • Child, family and school social work job opportunities are expected to increase by 15% by 2022.
  • Medical and public health social work job opportunities are expected to increase by 27% by 2022.
  • Mental health and substance abuse social work job opportunities are expected to increase by 23% by 2022.
  • All other types of social work job opportunities are expected to increase by 9% by 2022.
