LCU Radio is "On Air"

Lubbock Christian University cut the ribbon on the newest program on campus today with the grand opening of ChapRadio. “I’m so excited to be on the radio,” said Mass Media major Lindsey Miller. “My family in California get a kick out of listening to my show.” Miller was one of several student announcers participating in the live broadcast of the ribbon cutting which was done by LCU faculty and the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce.

“LCU has always been about the students, and an experiential education is a part of that. ChapRadio gives our students the chance to gain experience,” says LCU President Tim Perrin. “We are always looking for ways to expand the LCU community and with ChapRadio we can expand and connect to our alumni and friends in other places.”

ChapRadio is currently running over 50 radio shows each week, produced by students of all majors and backgrounds, allowing anyone interested in broadcasting hands-on announcing experience. The name is from the school mascot, the Chaparral.

In the past month, has had almost 1800 visitors tune in from all over the world. One radio show had a caller from Houston win a prize, and another had a live call come in from Switzerland.

With the new Android App now available and an iPhone App to be released soon, the ChapRadio listening base continues to grow. Show topics are also high in variety, ranging from country music to dramatic readings of literature. LCU Communications and Fine Arts Professor, Shawn Hughes, refers to ChapRadio as a classroom or a lab, a safe learning environment open to variety.

“We are very proud of ChapRadio. This is the culmination of years of work and planning to get to this grand opening. It is very rewarding to see students realize the power of radio and mass communications in a very personal, first-hand way when they do a live show on the air", Hughes said.

“I’m thrilled that we are back in broadcasting,” says Professor of Communications and the former director of KLCC, Dr. Don Williams. “We have been able to pick up many listeners online, and our student anchors are getting phenomenal experience.” reflects the growth of LCU’s developing Mass Media program.
