Four Chap Baseball Players Claim D2CCA All-Region Honors

Four members of the Lubbock Christian University baseball team were recognized as All-South Central Region selections by the Conference Commissioners Association of Division II (D2CCA), as Ricky Contreras (pitcher) and Ryan Rogers (designated hitter) received First Team honors and Jaime Bustamante (shortstop) and Daniel Crooks (pitcher) claimed Second Team honors.

Contreras, a sophomore pitcher, is 10-2 on the season with a 2.67 ERA. He has made 16 starts (co-leads nationally), with seven going the distance to move into the top-10 nationally in complete games. The Lubbock, Texas native leads the conference and ranks in the top-10 nationally in victories on the mound with 10. A Heartland Conference First Team selection and Heartland Conference Pitcher of the Year, Contreras was also a NCBWA All-Region recipient.

Rogers claims his second All-Region selection this season, as earlier he was named NCBWA All-Region. The junior from Littlefield, Texas claimed All-Conference honors with a .357 hitting mark on the season. He led the team with 17 doubles (third in the conference) and 46 RBI (fifth in conference).

Bustamante, LCU's primary leadoff batter, hit .342 this season with 75 hits and 36 RBI. His 75 hits ranks second in the conference. The Presidio, Texas native also ranks second in the conference in triples (6, which ranks tied for 11th nationally), fourth in runs (51) and fifth in total bases with 110. Bustamante, who also claimed NCBWA All-Region honors, has claimed Heartland Conference All-Conference and All-Defensive Team honors with a .934 fielding percentage.

Crooks went 9-2 on the mound this season with a 2.88 ERA. The Midland, Texas native leads the Chaps in strikeouts (96) and in holding opponents to a .211 batting average. He allowed an average of 6.5 hits (leads the conference) and 9.8 strikeouts per nine innings during the season to lead the team in each category.

Four players named to All-Region in the D2CCA is a single-season high for LCU.

Contreras and Rogers will now be placed on the national ballot for All-America Consideration. The All-America teams are scheduled to be released on Friday, May 26.
